FOR the first time in four years we had a Leinster winner of the National Boys Strokeplay as two time Leinster Matchplay Champion Evan Carry added a national title to his list of honours with a six shot victory over the field in Royal Meath today. Rounds of five and seven under par gave the Castletown player victory over Deerpark’s Lorcan Martin in second on six under par as a second round of four under par helped Lorcan to the silver medal. Evan became the first winner of the Eugene McCarthy Cup from the Eastern province since Shane Redmond won in St Bridgets back in 2012.

It was a great day in general for the Killarney club as they claimed the other two prizes on offer in the Boys grade. Padraic Looney claimed third on countback from Gaeil Colmcille’s Seanie Bellew with a second round of four under par after both players tied on 104. Munster Matchplay Runner-Up Cillian Courtney was the other prize-winner from Deerpark winning the 10-13 prize with a score of one under par.

The Girls competition meanwhile saw Lucan’s Aoife Mahon retain her title but she had to come from behind to do so as she trailed Bellewstown’s Katie Rose Heeney by four strokes after the first round on 65. However a closing two over 56 was enough for Aoife to keep her crown with a total of 121 as Katie finished three shots behind on 124. Aoife’s sister Sarah was third on 144.
