2019 Munster Under Strokeplay Latest

Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor reports on the Provincial U-16 Strokeplay Championships which took place in Rochfortbridge in Leinster and Hillview in Munster.

 

Leinster

Dylan Hudson became a Leinster U-16 Matchplay and Strokeplay Champion (seperate years) after victory in the 14-15 section of the Leinster Boys Strokeplay. The St Patricks Enniscorthy player and Irish International put in a strong last nine holes to his first round to lead after 18 holes with four under par, one ahead of Kilbeggan’s Jack Mullins turning with Luke Murphy of Seapoint and Brian Bray of Collinstown both shooting level par for their first 18.

 

            Dylan stated one ahead of Jack with nine to play in moving to five under and he managed to hold that score in the finish for a two shot win as Jack had to settle for second on three under par. Jason Brady of Poulaphouca put in a second round of three under par meanwhile to claim third with a 36 hole total of two under par, the only other player to finish under par in the category at the Westmeath track with Brian Bray finishing the tournament on level par.

 

            Conor Mullins of Kilbeggan meanwhile was the only other player to be under par on the day as he won the 10-13 section with nine shots to spare. Conor matched Dylan’s winning score of five under par with rounds of two and three under par as Eanna was one of only three players to break 60 in his two 18 hole rounds. He started with one over and then followed up with three over to finish on 112 as Lucan’s Alex Keegan was the only other player to do sub 60 rounds. Keegan had rounds of seven and two over par in finishing on 115. That allowed him to claim the bronze medal as he held off Prosperous’ Michael Behan who had a good level par second round in finishing the grade on eight over par, 116 in total.

 

            The Girls event saw Sophie Farnan do her own provincial double with a 10 over par, 118 giving her a 12 stroke victory over Lucan’s Eimear Ahern in winning the Strokeplay event. Sophie went round in three over par in her second round to put the seal on her winning having lead Maebh Ahern by six t the halfway stage. Eimear had a better second round than her sister in the second 18 however with eight over to finish the event on 130 two ahead of Maebh in third.

 

            Maebh’s total of 132 was 16 strokes better than Kilbeggan’s Gemma Cuffe in fourth on 148.

 

Munster

A third provincial double on the day was completed by St Annes Glenn Towler and in some style too as his 15 under par score in Hillview was seven clear of his nearest challenger. Glenn won a fourth provincial title in total, two Matchplays and two Strokeplays now as the latter have been done back-to-back by winning the 10-13 and 14-15 honours in consecutive years.

 

            Glenn led Deerpark’s Fintan Martin by two strokes at the halfway stage with six under but took a decisive grip on the title with his second round of nine under par making him the only player to shoot double figures. The player he defeated in the Semi-Finals on his way to the Munster U-16 Matchplay, Deerpark’s Cillian Courtney, would emerge to take second with a second round of five under to go with an opening three under giving him a total of eight in the Runner-Up spot. Cian Mulcahy of Collins had the second best individual round of the day in his second 18 of seven under par after opening with level par in Clonmel. That saw him just edge Deerpark’s Eoin O’Riordan Looney for the bronze medal after somewhat similarly Eoin had a second round of six under having started with level par.

 

            The 10-13 grade was dominated by Deerpark however as they claimed a 1-2-3 in the final standing led by Robbie Harnett finishing on eight under par. Robbie led his club-mate Ryan McCarthy by one stroke after the first 18 holes with three under par but a Hole-In-One and the second, second time round allowed him to pull clear and finish six clear of Ryan for a finish as Ryan remained on two under, two ahead of his club-mate Brian McCarthy.

 

            Brian had two solid level par rounds in claiming the bronze medal just enough to hold off Hillview’s Owen Quigley who finished with a second 18 of one under par to finish the tournament on one over par.
